In wash watercolor you would dilute the paint and the watercolor is then applied in a very fluid state. You can never be sure of anything in watercolor, temperature in a room, a new introduction of paint to the surface, things change and watercolor changes all the time.
With watercolor please have 2 containers with clean fresh water ready along with clean brushes to get started. Remember to clean your brush after each application of paint. You will need the saucer or 5-slot paint container we spoke about in the beginning. Remember to mix plenty of paint; remixing when doing a wash is difficult at best. Sometimes what happens is your paint dries by the time you have mixed the second batch and that will produce a line on the paper, or it will produce ripples? If you are just starting out in watercolor even if you have some really fantastic paper, try to tape it down, it is always a good way to start. If you want to paint one color over a very large surface a sponge will be useful instead of a brush, but either work fine, try them both.
