The sponge is a necessary and needed tool for the artist. There are many varieties of sponges, try a few and see what is your favorite.
The textures from one sponge to another vary. You could make fluffy clouds, sea foam, gravel, and flaking walls. Patterns like cement, wooden boards and fences can be painted with a flat edged sponge. You can cut the sponge to your desire or pull it apart. To create an uneven covering turn the sponge slightly each time you lay the paint onto the canvas. To make it smooth hold it the same way all the time. Always remember to rinse the sponge and care for it as you would your brushes, with care.
